Driving Matters

Imagine, as the reader of this post, that you realize you need a few items from the grocery store for dinner.  So you make a list, put on your coat, grab your wallet, the keys, and “Oh wait!  I don’t drive anymore.  Now let me think.  How am I going to get to the grocery store now?  Hmm.  Well, I’ll call GoGo Grandparent; they’ll hail an Uber or Lyft driver for me”.  So I call. “No drivers available for the next 30 minutes.  So I can wait, or I can think of another plan. I’ll call my neighbor, Sam.  No, wait, it’s Sunday and Sam is often spending time with his family on Sunday.  I’ll call Sheri (my daughter).  No.  I don’t want to do that.  She’ll be burdened by having one more task to add to her to-do list this weekend.  And besides, I want her to keep thinking that I’m able to take care of myself.  So, I guess I’ll wait for that driver through GoGo Grandparent.  I just hope they’ll have a driver available right away when I’m done shopping.  It’s uncomfortable to have to stand at the exit of the store and wait”.  Sigh.

At Pro31 Safe Senior Driver, http://www.pro31safeseniordriver.org, we are in the business of bringing answers, and hope, for folks facing the sensitive issue of driving.  And it is our goal to help folks extend their driving career as long as it is safely possible, and to ease the transition when a move to the passenger seat is the best idea.

These are the types of questions we help folks answer:

What can I do to be able to drive as long as possible?

What does the research say I should do to not hurt myself or anyone else while driving?

How do I keep my independence, so I don’t become a burden on family or friends?

How will I still get to the places I want to go if I don’t drive?

How do I know when it’s the best idea for me to make a permanent move to the passenger seat?

How does my chronic illness/condition impact my ability to drive safely?

What driving habits do I need to change because of changes in how well my body and mind work?

Is my life over once I stop driving?

We can help.  Keeping you in the driver’s seat.  Bringing Peace of mind.  Click on the link for “Senior Driving Self Assessment” on the Better People Care website http://www.betterpeoplecare.com, or visit us at http://www.pro31safeseniordriver.org for more information or to reach out and let us help you with your driving questions.
