Proud But Not Pompous

Proud: showing proper self-respect

Pompous: having or exhibiting self-importance

On this Fourth of July, you will find me standing for our flag.  Standing and singing loud when the National Anthem is played.  Enjoying fully the celebration of this day.

But I will stand and I will sing and I will enjoy, not because I am pompous.  No, I will stand and I will sing and I will enjoy fully because I am grateful.  And I will display “proper self-respect”(pride) as I continue in my efforts to bring goodness to the people of this land, while doing what I can to protect the land and its creatures.

I do not take for granted the gift of having been born in this country.  Is this country perfect?  No way.  Is it doing most things right?  Well, I’m not sure.  But this country still stands for hope, and opportunity, and a place where folks like my ancestors can work hard and grow a brighter future for generations to come.

And I remember and am humbled by those who gave their lives to defend and protect what they believed in.

I, too, was willing to give my life if need be.  I am grateful for the privilege of serving in the United States Army Reserve, and proud of my Dad, who served in the Marine Corps, and my brother, who served in the Army National Guard.

I still believe that this country is a gift.  I still believe that most people in this country are good and hard-working and striving to do good.

I am grateful to be an American.  And I recognize that with the gift of being an American comes a responsibility to show proper self-respect, to love others well, to be a person who gives more than I take.

Maybe more gratitude for the gift of living here would breed more goodness?

Regardless, the Better People Care team will remain grateful that we live in a country where we get to bring hope and beauty into the lives of those living with dementia and their families.

Standing,

Jill
