The Role of Empathy in Dementia Care

Empathy is a cornerstone for how the Better People Care team gets it right with dementia care.

Empathy-the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Extending empathy for our companions with dementia is personal; every one of us has been personally touched by dementia, and/or by taking on the role of caregiver.  Many of us have seen senior care, dementia care, and people care done poorly.  All of us feel empathy for the uncertainty and confusion of what our companions with dementia know each day.  And we are committed to getting it right.

We feel empathy for those taking care of their loved ones with dementia.  While we don’t walk in their shoes, we see, know, and hear what their days are like.  And we give our very best to bring relief where relief is needed, and training/education when that might bring a big dose of help.

Empathy is part of what helps us bring the right kind of care into the lives of those living with dementia and their families.  And it is behind the heart we bring, too.
